The Banana Industry is one of the case studies included in Powerful Geography 2 as part of the Global Sustainability topic. In this post we have provided the proof pages for this case study to assist teachers in planning and programming for the HSC year during this term. This is one of the longer case studies included in this chapter, and the Visualise This features in this chapter will help students gain a better understanding of concepts related to this study - Criteria for Evaluating Industry Sustainability, Pillars of Sustainability, A Circular Economy, Sustainable Development Goals, and Benefit Sharing. There are over 1000 varieties grown globally including the red banana, the lady finger and the plantain. The Asian continent is the largest banana-producing region, while Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACs) form the largest exporting region. The top two producers of bananas, India and China, grow the fruit largely for their domestic markets. This case study will address the disparity between the customer price and the overall cost of banana production, transportation and distribution, labour exploitation, chemical contamination, supply chain wastages vulnerability to disease, food security, monoculture. In addition it will explore the impact of COVID-19, volatile fuel prices and political tensions on the industry's supply chain. It will examine how industry certification standards and technological advancements are addressing sustainability. These proof pages are for planning purposes and not classroom use. Changes have been made for the printed book. Publication is planned for early Term 4.
